Salmagundi
The Pirate's Treat

Honest Jack and Matey the parrot are smiling because dinner's cooking. This picture shows the cook stirring a pot of salmagundi.

If you wonder why Honest Jack and Matey the parrot are smiling in this picture, part of the answer is behind them. The cook's making dinner and tonight it's salmagundi, the pirate's favorite treat.

Like its name, the stew was quite a mouthful! According to the New England Pirate Museum (http://www.piratemuseum.com/), there were two types of Salmagundi. From the recipes, it looks like one was for sea and one was for land. Salmagundi included the following ingredients:

Recipe #1: fish, crab, wine, spices, anchovies, cabbage, hard-boiled eggs, oil, and vinegar all boiled in a large pot of water with salt, pepper, and garlic to taste.

Recipe #2: beef, pigeons, wine, spices, fruit or cabbage, hard-boiled eggs, and onions all boiled in a large pot of water with salt, pepper, and garlic to taste.

Back in the pirate days, all kinds of fish and reptiles were used for Salmagundi. No one knows if they really added old shoes.
